Interior Dept. Says Drilling OK in ANWR

1/21/2002
For months, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and U.S. Department of the Interior have clashed over the projected effect oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) would have on polar bears there. In 1995, the USFWS concluded that ANWR contains the largest concentration of denning polar bears in Alaska -- making those grounds crucial for species procreation, especially given an existing international treaty on polar bear protection. However, the Dept. of the Interior insists that oil drilling would not harm the bears or their larger population, and just recently made this position official. This stance further paves the way for industrial expansion and development within America’s dwindling last frontier.
