Fate of ANWR Decided Soon

1/26/2002
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) faces its greatest threat this coming month, as proposed legislation (included in the Bush Administration's larger Energy Bill) will be voted upon by the U.S. Senate -- the bill has already passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. If after debate the Senate decides to approve the bill and it becomes legal policy, America's last true wildlife frontier will be compromised for the sake of unnecessary oil development. ANWR is home to vast herds of caribou, polar bears and other unique wildlife. It was originally set aside for protection in the late 1970ís under the Carter administration, which intended to keep it a haven for nature -- and have the area remain relatively free from human intrusion.

Green Fact:
Humpback whales swim the waters of every ocean on the globe, and regularly follow regular migration routes -- spending summers in colder waters for feeding and winters in warmer waters for breeding.
