U.S. and Canada Sign Air Quality Pact

12/8/2000
The U.S. and Canada signed an agreement Thursday to sharply reduce smog-causing pollution emitted mainly by power plants, hoping to ensure that both countries' citizens breathe cleaner air in the future. The proposal calls for a total reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions by 50 to 75 percent by 2004. Moreover, both sides have pledged to cut production of volatile organic compounds, which when combined with nitrogen oxides in sunlight, create ground-level ozone (smog). These measures also aim to limit the number of premature deaths caused by unhealthy air... currently, about 5,000 deaths in Canada and 60,000 in the United States occur annually because of pollution.
