Organic foods, no pesticides
4/21/2003
Fact: An estimated 2.5 million tons of pesticides will be used in worldwide agriculture production this year. These harmful products increase chemical concentrations in groundwater, long term degradation of soil quality, the bio-accumulation of chemicals in the food chain, and a decrease in surface water quality. Moreover, the production of many agricultural chemicals results in toxic emissions and wastes from factories.
Action: Buy Organic Food when you can. If your local markets don't carry organic products, ask them to! By purchasing organic food you can help to--
- Reduce the amount of chemicals produced.
- Encourage farmers whose practices enhance, rather than harm, biodiversity.
- Preserve water quality and minimize soil degradation.
