World Environmental Conference Gathers

Representatives from roughly 180 countries will meet this week in The Hague (Netherlands) to try and answer the many big questions raised by the Kyoto Protocol, negotiated in Japan in 1997. It is currently the only worldwide strategy for dealing with global warming, though it has not been ratified by most nations domestically -- including the United States, which produces the most greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Delegates at the conference hope to develop clear, attainable goals for curbing the harmful effects of mass pollution and implementing sound environmental policies. Yet, the greatest issue facing the conference seems to be that while many big industries follow emissions-cutting guidelines, people are not. To be successful, delegates must take into account large companies and individual consumers -- creating policies that effect both fairly.
